Teaching Information

Jesse offers trumpet lessons to students of all ages and levels of experience in Fairfax County, Virginia and in the Washington DC area. In his teaching Jesse blends broad pedagogical knowledge with a personal touch that creates a supportive, yet challenging environment for each student. He strives to develop a positive working relationship with each student and challenge him or her to develop the skills he or she needs as a trumpet player. He brings a rich sense of musicality and performance experience to his teaching, encouraging students to play more than just the notes (although those are important too) and to express themselves through their playing.

teaching experience

Jesse has experience teaching students with widely varying backgrounds. He teaches young players brand new to the instrument, starting them off on the right track; he also teaches more experienced trumpeters of all ages. Jesse has experience helping students prepare both musically and mentally for music festival and summer music camp auditions.

teaching philosophy

An effective teacher-student relationship is very important to growth as a musician. Jesse strives to build this relationship and a trust between him and his students. Jesse’s experience as an active performer and his solid background in music education, inform his teaching with real world experience and pedagogical knowledge.

Trumpet playing is based on the efficient use of air to produce quality sound. Therefore Jesse’s approach to teaching is to first develop efficient breathing in his students. In addition to deep and relaxed breathing Jesse will work on all aspects of student’s skills, from developing sound to developing technique, but underpins it all with rich musicality and meaningful expression.
